Celebrating Cultures, Building Community
At The Green School Bangalore, we believe that one of the greatest gifts we can offer our learners is an appreciation for the rich diversity of the world around them. As a secular learning environment, we celebrate every culture, every tradition, and every story with equal enthusiasm and respect. Our aim is not simply to acknowledge festivals, but to help our learners understand the values, histories, and communities behind them.
Throughout the year, our campus transforms into a vibrant tapestry of colours, flavours, music, and traditions as we celebrate festivals from across India and around the world. These celebrations are immersive, joyful, and deeply meaningful, allowing learners to experience culture through participation rather than observation.
During Pongal, learners gather around earthen pots to prepare traditional sweet pongal over an open fire, create colourful rangolis, chop sugarcane, and learn about the festival’s connection to gratitude, harvest, and community. At the same time, they are introduced to the spirit of Baisakhi, exploring how different regions celebrate similar themes of abundance, thanksgiving, and new beginnings.
Eid is celebrated through conversations about compassion, generosity, and togetherness. During Ganesh Chaturthi, learners discover the stories and symbolism associated with Lord Ganesha. Krishna Jayanthi comes alive with laughter and excitement as children take part in the beloved tradition of breaking a pot filled with makhan, just as young Krishna is said to have done.
Holi fills our campus with colour and joy while teaching children about the triumph of good over evil and the importance of embracing differences. During Dussehra and Diwali, learners explore stories of courage, righteousness, and light overcoming darkness, while participating in activities that bring these traditions to life.
Christmas at TGSB is a celebration of kindness, generosity, and giving. Alongside festive cheer, our learners come together to donate books, uniforms, stationery, and other essentials to orphanages and communities in need, learning that the true spirit of the season lies in sharing with others.
These celebrations are often accompanied by traditional foods, music, storytelling, performances, and ethnic attire, creating opportunities for learners to step into one another’s worlds with curiosity and respect. In doing so, they begin to understand that while customs may differ, the values that unite us, love, gratitude, generosity, courage, and community, are universal.
At TGSB, cultural celebrations are not events on a calendar. They are opportunities to nurture empathy, broaden perspectives, and foster a genuine appreciation for the diverse world we inhabit. By learning about one another’s traditions, our learners discover an important truth: our differences make us interesting, but our shared humanity brings us together.
